Planetary Collective is a team of three English Film-makers, Director, Guy Reid, Editor, Steve Kennedy and Director of Photography, Christoph Ferstad. Their short film Overview was launched at Harvard University and to-date has had over 1.5 million hits on Vimeo.

The film explores the Overview Effect that many astronauts describe when seeing the Earth for the first time from space.

The team are currently in post production on a feature documentary called Continuum that further explores ideas and philosophies raised in Overview.

2ser’s Evan Shapiro spoke to Director Guy Reid about the beginnings of Overview and Continuum.

Richard Walter - UCLA screenwriting guru,

The Australian Writers’ Guild, Inscription and AFTRS are giving Australian writers a rare chance learn from a teacher who has inspired some of the greatest box office hits of the past 15 years.
Richard Walter is a celebrated storyteller, movie industry expert and longtime Chairman of UCLA’s graduate program in screenwriting.
His graduates have written dozens of Hollywood blockbusters and indie productions, including Benjamin Button, Forrest Gump, Milk, Sideways, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones to name a few.
Evan Shapiro spoke with Richard about his seminars but naturally enough the conversation soon turned to the art and origins of good storytelling.

Wasted on the Young - A Chat with Director Ben C Lucas

The new movie from Australian Writer/Director, Ben C Lucas is called WASTED ON THE YOUNG. It tells the story of a bunch of elite high-school seniors involved in what can only really be described as an escalating hate war.
Grown-ups are invisible and the cool clique rule. Lucas maintains that it's not social commentary – instead choosing to describe his film which involves bullying, sexting, youth suicide and drug and alcohol abuse as “a dark fairytale.”
The film was shown as part of the Sydney Film Fest last year and at the time he was quoted as saying he was happy if people loved or hated the film. Celluloid Dreams' reporter, Michael Jones, asked him whether he still stood by that now that the film's getting a commercial release.

Making CATFISH

Exploring the darker side of relationships in the digital age, is the new documentary, CATFISH. A fascinating, and at times, troubling film that raises questions about the boundaries of online escapism and technology-based relationships.
The project got started when filmmakers, Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost decided to start filming Ariel's brother. Niv, a photographer, had just received an email from an 8 year old girl who wanted to know whether it was ok to turn his photos into paintings. The creative collaboration develops and over time, Niv ends up meeting other members of the family online and even starts a romantic relationship with the older sister, discovering later that nothing was as it seemed.
Because of all these twists and turns, CATFISH is a phenomenal story and now an international success story.
Daz Chandler caught up with Ariel, Henry and Niv for this interview.

It’s been a long time since mobile phones were used simply for making and receiving calls… There’s no question that mobile phone technology is one of the chief drivers behind our ever-changing media landscape. So, it’s not surprising that mobile phone filmmaking is becoming it’s very own industry. And in September, Australia will host its very first international mobile phone film festival. I admit it. I've always been a little bit "goth-esque" - and yes, the use of that rather pretentious suffix 'esque' is further proof of that (as is my collection of Sylvia Plath poetry, my inclination for pointy shoes and the fact that my once blonde hair has been black since I was 16)... Anyway, I digress. I also love to get down with our immortal fanged friends in their various pop culture manifestations. And before you ask, NO - Twilight doesn't count.
If like me, you live in old Sydney town & you find these blood-sucking creatures well...kind of irresistible, you'll be thrilled to hear (if you haven't already) that there's a special program of Vampire Cinema at this year's Film Festival.

INDONESIA CALLING: Was this Australia's first piece of activist filmmaking?

One of the documentaries screening at this year's Sydney Film Festival tells the story behind one of this nation's first ever activist films.
Called INDONESIA CALLING. this 22-minute flick from 1946 documented a fascinating part of Australian history - a moment in time when the Aussie trade unions turned their back on the Dutch - and indeed the White Australia policy - to assist the Indonesians in their fight for independence.
It was directed by Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens who was later exiled from The Netherlands as a result of this film. His Australian crew didn't get off lightly either - they were kept under ASIO surveillance and deemed a threat to our nation's security.
It's an amazing part of Australian cinematic history but more than that, it's a riveting account of early Aussie trade union & community activism, decolonisation in action and our relationship with our northern neighbour, Indonesia.
The man responsible for the new documentary exploring this largely unknown piece of history is Melbourne based independent filmmaker, John Hughes. He joined Daz Chandler for this interview.
